The opera concerns the romantic struggles of the King of Castile, Alfonso XI, and his mistress, the "favourite" Leonora, against Librettist: Alphonse Royer, Gustave Vaëz.

The Ricordi Critical Edition of Gaetano Donizetti's La favorite is a welcome addition to my collection of piano vocal scores. It is scholarly, complete, almost anal retentive in its completeness. The score has both the French and Italian versions of the score for performers, a length written critical introduction, alternative versions of the 5/5(3).

'La Favorita' contains some of Donizetti's finest music, even if the plot will bear little scrutiny. It has been a favourite (sorry) of many a high-flying tenor with a ready top C and some artistry to boot. This recording is from the s and first appeared on the expensive (in UK) Cetra label/5(19).
